Return to Ottawa?

Filed under: Machinima — Overman @ 8:50 am

Very interesting quote I just read (thanks, Cartoon Brew): “This year we’re putting some emphasis on reaching out to the gaming, mobile, wireless and interactive world. With more and more animation being made for non-traditional distribution platforms, it’s important that the OIAF celebrate the work being done in these new forms, so we’ve expanded our New Media Competition to include mobile content and interactive educational and gaming animation as well as shorts made for the Internet.”

Who said this? Chris Robinson, Artistic Director for the Ottawa International Animation Festival, the festival which famously snubbed machinima a few years ago after inviting it.

For those who felt the personal pain of the old rejection, this invite is going to taste a tad bitter. But I hope some machinimators do take this opportunity to show the general animation community just what we’re capable of. No entry fee, check here for details. The deadline is June 1, and the festival itself is from September 19 to 23. Go show ‘em what we’re made of!

  1. Mike and I decided after the snub (we were there, it hurt) that no matter what, we’d be back, and we’d rock their freak’n socks off! Although I could understand why some would still rather not, up to the moment of snubbing the festival folks were awesome, put us up in nice digs for the week, and we got to pass our cards around to some pretty important producer types. Over all, a great event.

The one thing I’d encourage people to keep in mind is that this festival had judges who spat on works like Fake Science, The Journey, and Anna… Might want to have something with a little more punch…
