Only Credits and Snubbing

Filed under: Machinima — Overman @ 8:28 am

The credits for Only are now posted on the film’s page, as promised. For the sake of page loading time, I opted to go with a linked list of creators rather than individual links for every single item… which would have made the list unbearably long. Now you know why I opted out of on-screen creds for this one! Whew!

The list is not comprehensive, for one simple reason: some custom content creators still do not designate their name anywhere on their creation’s description, making it a nightmare to try to track them down afterwards. I did my best under the circumstances, but I’m sure I missed a few of you. My apologies to any omitted. Feel free to contact me with corrections.

For TS2 films in particular, when is the most efficient time to gather this credits info? I’m beginning to think it might be better to do it at the time of download… the only problem there is, I did not download this stuff all in one sitting… probably several dozen sessions. And, I probably downloaded twice as much as I ended up using in the final. Other Sims directors… what have you found works best for this?

By the way, I posted Only on the most active Nine Inch Nails forum, Echoing The Sound, in their forums specifically for user artistic creations. The forum boasts around 25,000 members. Twelve views of the thread, no comments. TWELVE! I have to think a factor is me not being a regular participant on the forum; some fora have an unspoken karma system wherein someone showing up out of the blue and saying “Hey, look at me!” is collectively ignored. I guess I understand that, while reserving the right to think it sucks. I’d have really valued their feedback, positive or negative, but I’m stretched too thin to get involved with yet another forum.

I used “machinima” in the post’s subject line, and I’m also second guessing that choice, though not out of insecurity. But if people have been taught to associate the word with “frag videos” or “RvB clones”… was invoking the word a very wise move on my part? Maybe I’ll tweak that, bump it, and see if I get better results?

EDIT: I removed machinima from the subject line and replaced with “Films”, and I added a link to a lower-quality YouTube version (previously was only offering DivX streaming), after I saw another poster criticized for making people jump through hoops to get to his content. Views doubled in a day, after amassing only that initial 12 in the first week, and I actually got some feedback from someone. Not the earth-shattering change I’d love to see, but it’s a step in the right direction. I’ll keep at it. The hardest part about making a snowball is that first few moments when you’re getting started.

  1. These days I’d strongly discourage most people from using the word “Machinima” in subject lines or headlines when posting to non-Machinima or non-gaming (or non-geek) sites, press organsations and so on. It either confuses or carries gaming associations with most people. Use it in the description, by all means, but don’t use it in the headline.

  2. Followed your link to the 9inch nails fan forum. Had no luck whatsoever tracking down your post.
Finally put the youtube Only URL as a search term and this returned 32 pages of thread headers.
I wonder if it’s fairly tricky to find stuff on that site?

I believe you have to be registered to even view it, FYI.

  4. For the Snow Witch, I kept a list of links/names on MS Word as I downloaded the content. It’s all very time consuming, but going on past experience it was easier to do that than have to go digging around later. Like you said though, many files don’t have the creator’s name attached and there is unfortunately a few items I’d had for months in my game that I couldn’t credit.

  5. Ditto on both from Om and Michelle.. as you’ve seen my work on that certain topic *cough* - it was hard but I did my best with what I had and what I could dig up and what the creator was willing to say. I didn’t change anything they wanted to keep quiet to give the truth (I respected thier intentions on the diguise) but in the end - you do what can with what you have.

Guess they forgot ‘Overman’ was the developer of Stealth Technology - oh well.. guess that happens alot :-P

  6. Thanks OM :) Well that was interesting. The quality of uploads in that artistic expressions thread is variable, but there’s plenty of other really good stuff that nobody has even looked at.
