The Stigma of a Label

Filed under: Machinima — Overman @ 1:23 pm

A multifaceted hot topic over on the MPrem forums this week included discussions about the significance of a label in the promotional efforts for a film. Namely, we’ve been pondering whether the “machinima” label helps or hurts, given the conflicting connotations which have emerged even as the word starts to gain more public recognition. (more…)

Net Traffic Space Invaders

Filed under: Machinima — Overman @ 9:25 am

You enter the network, looking to the right and left for signs of trouble.

NetQoS Network Traffic SimulatorEmail zips by your head, fat with data; you smile at the quality of service. Then in the distance, a server begins to smoke.

You float into the server’s zone and see that web and SAP are glowing red as the server painfully tries to support the flood of traffic.

A quick call to system management team and they reel in a rogue backup schedule. The data cools off and the server turns blue-green in contentment. Time to visit another sector… (source)

Afterworld

Filed under: Animation, Film, Machinima, Story — Overman @ 10:16 am

AfterworldI stumbled upon this the other day, quite by accident, maybe you’ve heard of it? It’s a made-for-internet animated series called Afterworld, featured on Bud.tv, and also syndicated over on YouTube.

It’s a graphic novel of sorts, told in a planned one hundred thirty 2-3 minute episodes… and it uses video game technology to tell its animated story. EDIT: Correction provided by Brent Friedman, the writer of the show: they use Poser and AfterEffects. Thanks Brent!

What’s most intriguing to me about Afterworld isn’t its story (which I do indeed find interesting), but a corporate-backed legitimate internet television station like Bud.tv. This is an online video venue which has cashflow; Afterworld was actually done on a commission.

One of the futures of entertainment?

Only Credits and Snubbing

Filed under: Machinima — Overman @ 8:28 am

The credits for Only are now posted on the film’s page, as promised. For the sake of page loading time, I opted to go with a linked list of creators rather than individual links for every single item… which would have made the list unbearably long. Now you know why I opted out of on-screen creds for this one! Whew!

The list is not comprehensive, for one simple reason: (more…)

Kate Walsh: Self-Made

Filed under: Audio, Machinima — Overman @ 9:25 am

The other day, in the course of discussion of the Dick Dale interview, I made reference to an entity whose birth I believe we will see in the not too distant future: the fully independent (and profitable) animator, made possible by the internet era. What I failed to mention was the phenomena we can already observe along those same lines in the neighboring world of music.

The latest such success? Twenty-three year old guitarist Kate Walsh, who started at MySpace and now finds herself atop the iTunes download album chart… an album recorded in a friend’s home. See this article for her story.

Don’t get me wrong here; I’m no peddler of pipe dreams. I do not believe that success is something everyone is entitled to, nor something everyone is capable of. There’s an obscure mix of talent + hard work + luck required for that to happen in virtually any artistic field, for all but the ubervirtuoso. But it IS possible. And possible without the involvement of a big record company or movie studio or what have you.

Speaking of pipe dreams… THIS has to be one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

New MachiniFeed Feature: DCHARS

Filed under: Machinima — Overman @ 8:29 am

A new variable regarding the length of articles returned by MachiniFeed has been added to the feed customization options. The customizer form has been updated, or you can incorporate it into your manual querystrings if you like. The default value is the same as it has been: 100 characters per article. So no change is necessary for existing custom feeds. If you wish, you can specify a value of less than 100 characters using this new “DCHARS” variable, or you can increase to up to 500 characters per article. Click here for more information.

Thanks, Anthony Bailey, for the idea!
