Promo Strats

Caught this article not too long ago, 15 Ways to Promote Your Online Video. Some really nice suggestions, there are so many tools out there which only a handful of machinima filmmakers have yet tapped.

The biggest, and perhaps most powerful, is the social bookmark phenomenon. Digg is probably the top dog, and it’s tough to get traction there. Some of the newer ones are interesting, like Blue Dot, which focuses specifically on the niche of internet video. Blue Dot has a pretty nifty friends system (so does Digg, and most of the others, btw), making it easy to rapidly share your finds with your buddies.

The ultimate goal at any of these sobo sites is to get enough attention to warrant front page coverage, so everyone sees it. It can be tough to get a snowball started, but if the content is strong enough, it can carry itself quite far once it gets rolling. I’ve been wondering what an organized team of machinima Diggers or BlueDotters (or whatever) could do for each other. So many items hit these sites and have only one or two people linking to them, they get lost in the sea of submissions. But what if someone organized a team of twenty people, organized around the goal of starting snowballs for their “hit” pieces. Hmmm…

  1. Reminds me of the podcast I just listened to about promoting your own film via the festival circuit. Once enough people have heard about it, the snowball effect can carry it forward.
