Custom YouTube Player

Filed under: Animation, Film, Machinima — Overman @ 9:50 am

A nice new feature over at YouTube… through this web interface, one can construct a customized embeddable player of select YouTube videos. (via Game Gods). I continue to be impressed with how regularly YouTube is polishing its interface and adding features. After the big buyout, I’d think it would be very easy to get lazy… but the guys behind YouTube continue to innovate.

I also continue to be impressed, though in a negative way, with the degree of entitlement some YouTube users seem to feel. The comments on this blog post are just one branch of a giant redwood tree of bitching and moaning about YouTube’s video quality… talking about it almost as if it’s a constitutional right or something. Get over it already! Or better yet, apply a little effort and get the best possible results you can. The video quality isn’t ALL on them.

Chewing the Cud had a really excellent article last month which covered some of this topic as it relates to machinima in particular. Some of his commenters have some good points, about wanting to maintain the quality they worked so hard to achieve, and that is both good and admirable… but the audience potential at YouTube may warrant a compromise in some cases, at the very least in the form of a trailer or something.
