OverByte #1
At last, I’ve come up with a name for my occasional link-purge posts, one that isn’t just a euphemistic ripoff of Shattered Keyboard. Eight bits = a byte. Perfect.
- Using CCTV for low-budget filmmaking. Truly punk spirit.
- New Antics Blog. I’ve added to MachiniFeed.
- The Rise of Lo-Fi. Interesting look at the way amateur video has influenced our perception of “truth” in video.
- The Silent Protagonist in Games. I’ve always thought it was an advantage for VR, a disadvantage for RPG?
- Microsoft and Bungie Parting Ways. Perhaps that’s why the promised revisions to the rules are taking so long??
- Team Fortress 2 is here. Anyone play it yet? I’m hearing very good things.
- Open Source Filmmaking. Awesome. Surprising someone hasn’t attempted this in machinima yet. Thanks, Mike Jones.
- Nature Illusion Studio. A very impressive and inexpensive solution for rain, snow, water reflections. Does some things better than Sqirlz (which is FREE), other things not quite as well. More versatile rendering options.

I picked Team Fortress 2 over the weekend via the Orange Box deal, I think I’ve logged in at least 24 hours of play. The art is great, and the model animations are VERY well done. They match the cartoon style perfectly. However, if you were ever a fan of the TFC gameplay at all, be warned, it’s greatly improved and now way too addicting for its own good. It’s certainly one of those games I can see myself playing for the next 2-4 years.
I haven’t done any reading on it at all, so I don’t know how much the final release will differ from the beta, but there’s only a few maps and it’s missing my favorite gametype with El Presidente. Just a small complaint considering the overall polish, really.

I’m commenting for absolutely no other reason than to give you kudos on the “OverByte” name. It’s so beautifully geeky it makes me squeal.
