Bitfilm Gem #1: weiss

Filed under: Animation — Overman @ 11:44 am

The Bitfilm Festival received strikingly little promotion this year compared to years past (at least in machinima circles that is the case)… which is a shame because there were some real gems among the submittals this year.

One such example is a delightfully minimalist piece called weiss by Florian Grolig. Look at what this director is able to communicate with very primitive-looking animation, no spoken words, and confining himself to a two color palette. 1. What a great short film! I missed this during all of the Bitfilm hubbub. It reminds me a lot of Beckett and the situations he puts his characters in (which are usually impossible). The combination of 2d and 3d is really marvelous. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. This is the direction I’d like my own films to go in. I’ll be sure to spend time at the director’s site. (PS the sound was very good, didn’t you think?)

  2. I totally agree. The sound was beautiful in its very simplicity. And it’s so VERY apt that it had no musical score. I, too, am very inspired by this kind of work.

  3. By the way, Ricky, this film’s look reminds me a bit of that Lynd Ward book you gave me, “Gods’ Man.”

  5. I like how the film didn’t have any spoken words in it. I think Bitfilm is based out of Germany if I’m not mistaken, and it was cool to see a movie like this transcend the language barrier. Any one could watch this film and be able to take something from it.

The sound was the first thing I noticed. The idea of folly work has me really interested. I recently watched the bonus disk that came with Halo 3 and it had a short documentary about how they found the sound effects for the game. For example, an alien door opening was the sound of a back car door opening (that “wooosh” sound), and the sound of shrapnel being embedded into concrete was done by taking a hatchet to an old school Xbox. My dad has some very cool (but old) audio equipment that I want to screw around with sometime.

I think you suggested “God’s Man” to me too, Ricky. I need to go over that list again! I have “The Fountainhead” now too, sitting on a shelf for a novel study I’m going to do next quarter. Too many books! =P
