Steadicam Demo

Filed under: Film — Overman @ 9:38 am

I cannot be the only person who had never seen one of these Steadicam devices in action. This demonstration and explanation of how it works, courtesy of Indy Mogul, was very enjoyable for me, and made me appreciate the value behind the scary price tag.

  1. Steadicam is remarkable and takes a skilled cameraman (+ good assistance) to operate at a high skill level. I’ve worked as an actor for several films that had fairly long steadicam, so I got to see the operation close up. On “Scannercop” we had a long steadicam shot that took about an hour to set up and the camera operator grabbed it in about 2 takes; believe me it was pretty complicated as it involved going from the outside to the inside of a building with people moving beside and in front of the camera. It really allows for a lot of freedom in shooting a scene. Also makes it easier to act since the steadicam allows you to move freely within a scene.

A good clip. Thanks for the post.
