Machinima Events Calendar
Johnnie Ingram (of Moviestorm, Machinima For Dummies, and Strange Company) was kind enough to set up a Machinima Events Calendar using Google Calendar, and I’m not sure how many people are aware of it yet. Things like the upcoming Machiniplex Premiere, the audio conferences, and other events are already being added. Viewing of the calendar is open to the public, so feel free to link to it, subscribe to its feed, or embed it on your website.
As for updating it, currently those who have that ability are Johnnie, Ricky Grove, and myself. I’d be very open to bringing an additional person into that editing role, if someone would be interested in populating the calendar with film festival-related info with some regularity. It would be a great service to your fellow machinima “peeps.” If that interests you, get in touch with me for more info.
Thanks, Johnnie, for thinking to set this up!

No, no and no, I don’t want to be sarcastic or start a discussion, really, but it will be useful to start a Anymation events calendar, too. What’s the difference?
On this other one authors will have opportunity to enter “copyrights sensitive” festivals and contests.
Of course, some Machinimas can enter both, but it will be useful to mark and show events where non game Machinima movies can compete with other animation techniques.

Colour coding? Watch out Tom, you might have volunteered yourself

OK, I take notes of interesting festivals anyway. Let’s see what Johnie, Phil and Ricky will say.
They can, of course, just extend number of events to these “ordinary” animation events without using term Anymation. Fine by me.

wow, what a great idea! i’d be pleased to be a volunteer updater.

That’s so weird. I was totally gonna nominate you, Trin. But then I was like… wait… I should maybe consult her on that one first.

Done! Tari and Tom it is. Thank you so much, both of you!

Just in case somebody is interesting:
For Academy Awards consideration, a short film that is not more than 40 minutes in running time (including all credits) and which falls into the animated (cel animation, computer animation, stop-motion, clay animation, puppets, pixilation, cutouts, pins, camera multiple pass imagery, kaleidoscopic effects and drawing on the film frame itself for example) or live-action film categories, can qualify in one of two ways:
1) The film must have been publicly exhibited for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for a run of at least three consecutive days (no fewer than two screenings a day) or
2) The film must have participated in a “recognized” competitive film festival and must have won the best-in-category award.
Furthermore, short films in either category must be composite prints in 16mm, 35mm or 70mm, in English or English subtitles. Television or internet exhibition anywhere does not disqualify a film, provided such exhibition occurs after its Los Angeles theatrical release, or after receiving its festival award. Documentaries, previews, trailers or advertising films are excluded.

It’s actually an excellent point, Tom, and one that’s of prime importance to me too. We should definitely make sure to state exactly what is and is not eligible for each competition or festival.
I hadn’t announced the existence of this calendar publicly yet, because I’ve been a bit lax in updating it recently (sorry Phil and Ricky!), but since Phil has now outed me :-), I’ll hereby commit to trying to keep it as up-to-date as I can. Tari and Tom’s offers of help are most welcome, though - thank you!

Cool idea, ta.
The audio conference looks interesting. I’d like to come along if I can get peace and quiet from kids. Can you check the date? The Google diary shows this Friday, though http://z-studios.com/conference/ shows next Saturday?

Russell, you’re right, that entry on the calendar was an out of date recurring entry; I’ve fixed the date, it should match the conference page now. I’m less certain that I got the time to match; I can never remember if I’m supposed to add events in my own time zone or in the time zone of the calendar. Can someone confirm for me what time the Sat. May 31 conference shows up for them in the calendar now?
When in doubt, though, the conference page should be correct always.

It shows up for me as “Sat, 31 May, 23:59 – Sun, 1 Jun, 01:59″ - I’m on BST.
If the event is going to held in SL, it might help to also state the time in SL time which then avoids confusion over daylight saving times?
British are the worst for always saying they are in GMT even when we are in BST. It’s probably a snobbery thing ‘oh ya, we invented GMT and I’ll keep reminding you, even if I am talking nonsense’…I digress.

The world starts in Grenwich! It’s a source of pride to us still - the only bit of Empire we have left really.
