Open to Suggestion
Okay, so this is basically shameless crowd-sourcing. But when you don’t know what to do, you don’t know what to do. Maybe someone out there has a good idea…
Quick note regarding Overcast: Due to some personal issues this week out of my control, and mounting pre-festival work commitments, I’ve decided to just let last week’s absence of episode serve as a day off for the show, and we’ll resume regular schedule next Friday. On Sept. 5, Ricky’s SIGGRAPH show will debut, along with a special announcement regarding things to come. Two weeks after that, Ricky and I are looking to give Antics v4 a thorough exam.
Have a great weekend!

I love the animation but it looks too slow, like it should maybe be 2x fast. That’s just me though. Music? Hmm. . . I love the music intro you found and used for the dissection labs. I’d go with something along the same lines.

Or sound effects for the letters flying by over some sort of music. Yeah.

Well, as kradproductions said, speed it up, and use sound from videocopilots ‘Designer FX’ pack. Truly amazing. Buy it or get it the dodgy way, but it has high quailty ‘Trailer’ FX like flying in text and imapcts for when the txt hits the background.
Good Luck.

Also use build up music, like rising voloume drum beats.

speed it up a bit, sure… but as for sound… you could end with a whispering, “machiniplex.” or a nice robot voice that says, “machiniplex.” or something. i’d maybe like to hear the word spoken.

I agree, speed it up a lot, what about some tinkle-tinkle sounds on the alphabet letters, one different tinkle per letter, building up until the end has maybe some lower drum sounds or something as it builds up? I agree, also like the thought of whispering the name too.
Comment by Trace — August 30, 2008 @ 7:01 pm
The tinkles notes on the alphabet letter would eventually make up a tune when the word became clear. I’m mumbling now…

trace, stop mumbling!

I agree with the whispering. It has to be a robot voice. . . it’s only too fitting.

I’m going to stick my neck out and vote a big fat “No” for robot voices. Shouldn’t we try to get away from the idea of machinima being all about emotionless, robotic characters and performance? I know that’s not the intention behind the robot voice, but I just worry that it will trigger the wrong associations.
Perhaps you could construct something that starts as a low hum but builds to an ear-throbbing “wall” of sound? I’m thinking about the audio that accompanies the Dolby stereo animation that’s played before most movies (in the UK at least). If you could subtly hint at that, it gives the idea of a new and revolutionary technique (which Dolby sound was, and machinima is) as well as evoking the idea of popcorn and movie theatres (which fits with the idea of the machiniplex).
I didn’t describe that very well, but hopefully you’ll understand what I’m getting at.

I am fully with Johnie on this.
Even further; maybe some old, silence movie piano sound slightly accompanied with electronic. Merge of traditional and things to come - Machinima.

Wow, everyone, thanks so much for all this input!
Here are my thoughts at this point:
1) Speed - Far more people suggest speeding it up rather than slowing it down. I’m going to go out on a limb here and disagree; I wanted there to be sufficient time to have a nice buildup in whatever sound ended up being present. However, enough people seem convinced of the value of a speedy version that I’m probably going to do it both ways, maybe present a side-by-side comparison for you to evaluate.
2) Whisper - YES! Great idea, Zuckerman!
3) Robot - I agree with Johnnie here, I’m going to avoid Mr. Roboto.
4) Tinkles - Intriguing, I’ll definitely play with this idea.
5) Check out ShawnKenobi’s video response, where he actually put some music to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLfSwRiauM8
