Ricky goes to SIGGRAPH 2008
The Overcast #036 is out at last. Unique among all the episodes ever released, this is a sonic journey. Loaded with L.A. field recordings, Ricky shares with us the experience of traveling to and experiencing SIGGRAPH while he was reporting for Renderosity.com. Relive the journey with him, and enjoy the wonderful soundscape.
As I edited together Ricky’s recordings, I got inspired by the relaxed feel of his sojourn. So I composed and performed on the fly (no sequencer or drum loops) some music to stitch things together. It was a great experience to create, and I hope the little musical segues enhance the production for you. I really need to sit down and improvise like that more often, it taps into a part of myself that a busy and structured life tends to make little time for. The whole experience was very Zen.
Also over there, you’ll see the announcement about the show I’ve been talking about, I’ll reprint it here:
We’re going to be trying something a little different. Right now we’ve been shooting for bi-weekly shows, every other Friday. In October, we’re going to try augmenting that schedule by adding what we’re calling “Sideshows” (and that only because “Snacks” is already in use by The Awful Show, my inspiration for trying this out). Basically, the idea is that we want to try to provide content Monday, Wednesday, and Friday… every week. We’ll continue to do the longer, produced podcasts every other Friday, but in between those episodes you’ll start seeing some other material, generally of shorter duration and more focused in nature. Interviews, spotlights, and so on. We’ll kick off the overcast “sideshows” starting October 6th, 2008.

You could canvas for some short pieces from the community for these shows, open up a ‘post-box’ where people could drop off audio files..specify a max length..maybe advertise upfront when you’ve got a particular topic coming up? I know this kind of thing usually gets a limited response, but it would be interesting to see any undiscovered presenter talent out there. You and Ricky would, of course, keep editorial control.

The drop box is a great idea, Kate! Ricky and I are already on your wavelength as far as involving community people in this, we’ve started approaching people weeks ago and I’ll be approaching even more very soon. Opening it up to drop-offs is very intriguing, I like it and just need to figure out the logistics.
