Okay, so with all the hub-bub of prepping for the Expo and going to MFF the week before, I managed to not release a video on Friday the 31st of October. In keeping with my commitment, I'm going to take this opportunity to get caught up in the most anticlimactic of ways... what is essentially a brief field recording of Manhattan as it lives and breathes on a weekday afternoon. I know some will think I'm crazy for saying so, and others will know exactly what I mean, but I freaking love The City. I feel a strange synergy with the place, like I was meant to spend time there.
This video will give you exactly zero of that sense, I imagine.
Union Square, Manhattan, NY
Monday, November 3, 2008, around 4:00 p.m.
Ricky Grove, Ben Grussi and I were in New York that weekend for the Machinima Film Festival. On this Monday afternoon, we'd just come from The Strand bookstore a couple blocks up the street, and were preparing to hop on the subway over to Canal Street for what would end up being a really great dinner in Chinatown.
Absolutely nothing of consequence happens in this video, it's just a slice of life capturing the hustle and bustle of this big city by this boy who doesn't spend much time in one.
Video was caught with a cheap Pentax Optio A10 camera; audio captured using a Marantz PMD660 with built-in stereo mics (because I forgot to pack a cable for my good microphone)

Sweet. I remember that corner. The audio brings me right back. Love how it changes so quickly from moment to moment. Very hard to get this kind of spontaneity from scratch if you were creating it yourself. I remember sounds from further away though. Probably the limitations of the on-board mic. A nice recording though. I did one, too, but the damn machine wasn't functioning properly and the recording didn't turn out.
What a great day that was.
I haven't lived in the city for over 10 years but every time I go back to visit, I realize how much I miss the energy, the transportation system (you realize how much other cities suck in that department) and the sheer size. I think for visitors, NYC is a place you either love or hate. I'm glad you're in the love category. ;)
