Push

Pretend for a moment that this is not machinima. Pretend it's not Second Life. Pretend it wasn't filmed in one week with a $50 budget as a "clear out the cobwebs" exercise.

Would this animation be any less impressive if you didn't now know these things about it? If you'd just stumbled across it on Motionographer or something (which is where it belongs).

Michael Nitsche recently brought up (again) whether machinima was art... or rather, (my paraphrase) whether machinima was behaving as art behaves. Oh my, yes... some of it certainly is doing so. Push indeed.

What a mind, and what a hand with her "paint brush" of choice. Lainy, your work humbles me, truly.

Trace's hand is that of a Master. I am speechless as to how wonderfully her work can move me. Thank you Trace for sharing.

As a side note, what an amazing time we live in, when a vision can be created and shared with others with the freedom of the Internet.

Congratulations.

Knowing how busy you've been lately, I've been waiting for the 'Phil meets Push' moment with some anticipation :) I've always found Trace's work inspiring, and this film is so well named, it pushes the boundaries.

Very interesting - it reminds me of MDotStrange's work a little with the quick jump-cuts and erratic scenes - it also reminds me of the Brother's Quay - only more colorful! Thanks for sharing!

So glad you did a post on "Push" which I consider to be a work of art, but not in the sense Michael Nitsche writes about. Push is connected to more Modernist works like Ballet Mechanique and Metropolis (Fritz Lang). Tom Jantol comes to mind as well. Human as machine caught in time is a favorite theme of modern art. Lainy's masterful film takes it all just a bit further since it's created in a virtual world, something the modernists would have a woody over.

Push is a great film and one that I hope will be influential to other machinima filmmakers who imagine machinima as something more than guns, stunts and WoW. What a relief to see a film with imagination. Since it's the fourth in a series, be sure to watch the other three, Avatar, Breathing and (my favorite) Fall.
