  1. Graphic Design: The New Basics - A great online resource to accompany what looks to be a great new book coming in May.
  2. The Art of the Title Sequence - A blog devoted to… exactly what it sounds like. Good stuff.
  3. iClone 3 Screenshots - The latest glimpse at the upcoming release, thank you Peter Edwards for the pictures.
  4. Antics 3.1 now works with Google Sketchup. I told you this was going to get interesting.
  5. Moviestorm Update 1.0.4. Features a magnificent list of fixes and improvements.
  6. GTA IV Cameo by Ricky Gervais - One of my favorite comedians / performers of this generation will be lending his personality, voice, and material to the next Grand Theft Auto. Someone should start up a blog documenting celebrity voiceover and/or character work in video games; the list would be surprisingly long.
  7. Daz Studio goes 2.1. The amazing free 3d app gets even better.
  8. FreakAngels Episode 0010. Is anyone else enjoying the heck out of this?

Stories Behind the Skits: BloodSpell is Bigger Than Jesus

Filed under: Audio, Comedy — Overman @ 9:13 am

To commemorate the release of the BloodSpell DVD, here’s the story behind the (in some circles) infamous mock newscast I did on the overcast back in episode #008 in July, 2006.

When Hugh talks about his magnum opus feature film, BloodSpell, it’s hard to contain his enthusiasm. But believe it or not, to hear him talk and write about it now, what you’re seeing is a slightly restrained version of that excitement. His verbiage is nowadays tempered a bit, this in large part due to how initial promotional efforts of the film were received. That reception, at least in the inner circles of the machinima community, ranged from quiet disdain to inflamed hostility. In fact, at times the zeal of the criticism eclipsed the promotion strategy being criticized… Hugh was called arrogant, full of himself, delusional, and worse.

All in a day’s work for a man hopelessly in love with filmmaking.

Stories Behind the Skits: KAK Apology

Filed under: Audio, Comedy — Overman @ 10:38 am

When I returned from my rather extensive machinima vacation in late 2005, the first person I reconnected with was Leo Lucien-Bay (Dr. Nemesis). If I remember right, I’d made a post over on Machinima.com’s forum, and he flagged me down via PM with a “OMG! Are you really back?”

We began chatting regularly, scheming about how to initiate a Quake 2 machinima revival, speculating about how to achieve a Red vs. Blue level of viewership. Along came a guy named Phil Barton, otherwise known as Digital Phil. He had this idea about hosting something called a “podcast” with a machinima emphasis, and approached Leo to be his cohost. Machinima Live! was born. A couple episodes in, Leo suggested that I be brought on as a guest for one episode, and I was asked to spend at least part of the time talking about Machinimation, Fountainhead Entertainment’s machinima tool which had manifestations in the engines of Quake3Arena as well as Doom 3.

The events leading up to a politically incorrect pitfall happened so fast. (more…)
