Voice Acting PSA

Filed under: Audio, Machinima — Overman @ 7:41 am

Created by shawnkenobi, a young and prolific Sims 2 voiceover talent, this cute public service announcement serves as a promo for a series he’s working on about the etiquette of dealing with voice actors. The “Monopoly guy” clip art feel cracks me up, as does the wholly politically incorrect humor. If he keeps this style and combines that in the series with genuinely useful info, he could really be on to something here. Not exactly on the level of You Suck at Photoshop, but it has the potential to be in that same kind of spirit of Education Plus.

Almost random “See Also” link: Ace Ventura - Monopoly Guy

GTA IV Machinima Tools

Filed under: Machinima — Overman @ 7:31 am

Some very exciting news about the PC version of GTA IV has surfaced in this recent first look article on IGN:

The nice thing about the PC version is the game will constantly be recording what’s going on. So if you pull off a particularly epic car crash or string of kills, you can hit a key to get the game to pull up the last 30 seconds of gameplay either in single or multiplayer modes.

From there it’s possible to edit the footage, adding filters, and fades and cut it up wherever you want. You can then take those videos and mash them together in the montage editor, then upload it to the Rockstar Social Club so the community can check it out.

Sounds similar to what I’ve heard about the machinima tools built into Halo 3, perhaps a bit more robust. It will be interesting to see if Rock Star attempt to make it difficult to get the footage out of the game for production pipelines other than the one specified here to their official community. But regardless, it’s an encouraging sign from a game that, just a few months ago, we thought very possibly would never make it to PC in the first place.

A little bird tells me someone is already researching and laying the groundwork for a machinima-related user mod!

Overcast Delay, plus Q2dQ2

Filed under: Audio, Machinima — Overman @ 3:42 pm

A change of plans, Ricky and I were going to cover Antics v4 in this week’s episode of the overcast, but I’d completely forgotten that Ricky was going to SIGGRAPH last week, compiling audio of his experiences along the way. So I’m in the process of prepping that for the next podcast, and we’ll take on Antics in the show afterward.

A little rain with a side of power outage cost me a day this week, and that has put me a bit behind. So I’m not going to have the show ready for release today per the schedule. I’m hoping to have it ready for you before this weekend is over. After that, things will be right back on schedule.

The storm put me behind on the weekly video release as well, so I’ve improvised and put the full Quake2 done Quick2 video on YouTube for the first time. Feel free to check it out below, or click through to YouTube’s site to watch it in higher quality.

Enjoy!

Apocalypsis Ex Machina (UT3)

Filed under: Machinima, Story — Overman @ 8:00 am

This wonderful piece of machinima by Andrzej Kozlowski is both a beautiful demonstration of the power of Unreal Tournament 3 and a remarkable example of an animated film with narrative yet no traditional characters. Part gothic machine, part nuclear allegory, framed in the context of an apocalyptic biblical interpretation. From his Vimeo posting for the film:

Apocalypsis Ex Machina is my interpretation of the Book of Revelation of John; it is an allegory of a nuclear bomb, where the ignition material is Earth (humans) and the igniter is Heaven. The events of the Apocalypse (4 horsemen, the lamb, the 7 seals, the beast and the dragon,…) are displayed as chemical injection mechanisms that support the preparation of the ignition. The visual style is kept in Gothic convention (architecture, painting, sculpture). Realised as a Machinima in the Unreal Engine 3 (UT3).
