After examining some other options, the next Talk the Machinima Talk audio conference is set to take place once again in Second Life, this month at a brand new location: a new private island owned by Fleef Fimicoloud and Stormy Harker!
Plus, we’ve picked a time which should be friendly for both North American and European participants.
Info on start time and location available here:

And here are some links relevant to planned topics for discussion, with the understanding that the floor is always open to other subjects:
We could even talk some Securom if ya like!
EDIT: This Vimeo thing is definitely the hot issue of the week. Here are a couple more references:
Ricky introduced me to Lively tonight, and it was like a final jigsaw piece fell into place in an idea that had begun with an interest in the TalkShoe platform. The result just might be a “best of both worlds” scenario, but I don’t know, you tell me.
I’ve detailed the idea in this thread on the ZS Forum. If you have previous, current, or even just wishful interest in the machinima audio conferences, let me know what you think of this as something to try out.
Part of what got me thinking about this, in addition to some users’ dissatisfaction with the Second Life platform for these events, was the SL-induced chaos we all fell a bit prey to at the most recent conference, whose notes I recently posted here. While the fray was indeed a lot of fun, I confess it was a bit of a let down content-wise, especially after coming off such a strong conference #07. I do want these to be fun, but moreso I want them to feel like genuinely valuable time spent for those who show up.
Anyhow, let me know what you think. As I mentioned in Overcast #033, I’m merely a facilitator in these things… they’re really all about YOU.
Oh, and by the way, about that other thing… yeah, I’m still hopelessly undecided. Stay tuned.

The next Machinima Audio Conference will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 2:00pm PST (that’s 5:00pm EST and 10:00pm GMT). While this is a bit early for the California people, I’m hoping this ends up being a time where we can get a good representation of participants on both sides of the pond. We’ll continue to keep the time fluid for future meetings until we find just the right pocket.
Speaking of the right pocket, there’s been some lively discussion of the choice of Second Life as a venue for Conference #05 which we’re trying again for this next one. At both this forum thread and at this comment thread (feel free to join in at either), those most vocal about the subject appear to be those unenthusiastic about SL. The jump in actual conference turnout, however, seems to suggest that at least some are okay with the decision.
I’d set out to respond to the most recent comment on the Conference #05 notes, and it turned out a bit longer than I’d anticipated, so I’m going to lay out that defense / explanation of the decision for you here:

The next Talk the Machinima Talk audio conference will be held on Friday, February 22, 2008 at 7:00 PM Pacific Standard Time. (That’s 10:00 PM Eastern, 3:00 AM GMT). Check here to confirm the time in your area.
This month the conference will be hosted by Frank Fox (of Fling Films) and Peter Rasmussen… and the event will take place for the first time inside Second Life. Frank will be hosting the event on his own land, you can look him up in world as Fleef Fimicloud for assistance. The location of the event is: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Caledon%20Cape%20Wrath/183/142/23/ It is recommended that, if you are new to Second Life, you give yourself at least an hour before the start time to walk through SL’s orientation process.
For the audio part of the conference, we’ll be using Second Life’s built-in voice chat capability. If you have a headset which works with Skype, it should work great with Second Life too. IMPORTANT NOTE: BE SURE TO HAVE SKYPE TURNED COMPLETELY OFF BEFORE TRYING TO USE VOICE CHAT IN SECOND LIFE. Sometimes Skype can seize the headset hardware, making it unavailable to other applications. Simply exit completely from Skype before connecting to Second Life, and you should be fine.
If you don’t have voice capability, but still want to participate, Second Life does of course have a versatile text chat system, so please feel welcome to show up even if you don’t have a headset.
The following Voice FAQ for Second Life should prove helpful: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Voice_FAQ
We’re very excited about trying the conference in this kind of venue, not only because of the added visual aspects of interaction, but because we expect that the person-limit and lag/latency issues we’ve experienced with Skype will not be as much of an issue here.
Tell your friends!
