This idea came from a comment by bllius on my blog (link). Having a central place where festivals (particularly their relevant calendar dates) could be stored.

I'm not sure an RSS feed is the ideal method for this kind of info; Johnnie Ingram and I have discussed doing something like this in a shared (public) Google Calendar, which I believe is fully viewable even by someone without a google account. There are also several standalone PHP/MYSQL calendar apps out there, I've just never seen one which impressed me.

Whether or not this is an aspect of MachiniFeed itself, or an adjunct project tied into it somehow ... perhaps a calendar app that injects items into MachiniFeed X number of days before their due dates... I've decided to take it on as a pet project. So if you have any thoughts on how it should work - and those thoughts need not be technical in nature - I'd much appreciate the input.

I like this idea, should be a good way of discovering new festivals also.

My idea is that a calendar for festivals, conferences, and contests related to machinima would be really useful (entry deadlines, actual festival dates, etc.).

Not sure what calendar apps out there are approriate, as I find most of them poorly done.

I've not been impressed with calendar apps out there either. A weekend search did turn up this, which looks promising:

It's commercial, but reasonably priced. Might be a good option, we'll see.

In case you missed it, we've come up with a solution to this issue that does not require the development of something new. Read all about it here (and check the comments for further elaboration):

Ah, so this will do that thing with pouring into the main feed?

Ah, into the main MachiniFeed feed you mean? After looking at the number of festivals and events we're talking about, I thought it would be too many entries for the main feed once it gets fully populated. The calendar has a feed of its own, but where it's really useful is if you add a view to the Google Calendar itself to your own calendar account... then the event reminder system built into Google Calendar takes care of notifications via email, as long as people have left those on when creating events.

There might be some ways MachiniFeed could scrape the RSS from the calendar and do some other things with it, I'll give that some thought.

I can see the problem of overcluttering -- I guess if you wanted to avoid that in the main feed you could do an "events coming up this week" insertion every sunday or something, but it's really not that important. I just wanted to know whether to keep track of this separately.
